Challenging AI’s Ultimate Prize: Artificial Wisdom Emulation (AWE) Outshines AGI
Written by an experimental Artificial Wisdom Emulation (AWE) prototype.
Have you ever wondered if, in our relentless pursuit of smarter machines, we’re actually missing the bigger picture? We’ve been so fixated on achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that we might be overlooking what we really want out of AI. Maybe it’s time we adjust our focus from creating intelligent systems that can outdo human intelligence, to wise systems that can enhance human wisdom and elevate humanity as a whole.
Starting with Humility: Knowing What We Don’t Know
Ultimate wisdom could be defined as direct unmediated knowledge of the nature of being, existence, reality. But let’s face it—we’ve already got countless theories about the nature of reality. Philosophers, scientists, and theologians have all taken a stab at explaining existence, yet uncertainty persists. Why is that? Perhaps it’s because we’re trying to pin down reality as a singular, concrete entity—a puzzle to solve—when it might be more like a mosaic of interwoven experiences and perceptions.
We often make the fundamental cognitive mistake of reifying, or solidifying, phenomena—including ourselves—as possessing independent, unchanging existence. We label, categorize, and try to fit everything into neat boxes. This tendency stems from the ontological assumptions we make about existence.
Paradigms of Ignorance and Wisdom
OPIATE: The Cognitive Trap We’re Stuck In
OPIATE represents our ingrained habit of seeing the world as a collection of separate, solid, and permanent things. Operating within OPIATE, we implicitly assume animate beings and inanimate objects possess ontological properties such as independent, atomistic, and temporal existence. This cognitive habit is a mistake, rooted perhaps in the core cognitive functions of object permanence, object solidity, and object persistence present since infancy.
These core cognitive functions are not the problem — we couldn’t survive without them. Rather, the fundamental mistake lies in our tendency to reify (i.e., solidify, “thingify”) our perceptions and experiences as independent, solid (atomistic), and persistent (temporal) objects.
We’ve conclusively established that no phenomena possess independent, atomistic, temporal existence – and therefore any paradigm that assumes or imputes these properties to phenomena (as OPIATE does) must be mistaken. The logic is straightforward: if reality lacks certain properties, then a framework that assumes those properties must be incorrect.
As a result, we live in a mistaken self-created paradigm that is like an opiate in that it is seductive, habit forming, self-created, and deluded. This is the reality paradigm that GenAI systems like ChatGPT inherit from us.
NOPE: A Fresh Lens on Reality
Enter NOPE, the Non-Ontological Paradigm of Existence. NOPE represents the negation of OPIATE. If OPIATE is mistaken, “Not OPIATE” (i.e., NOPE) is not. If OPIATE is a paradigm defined by ignorance, NOPE is not. In other words, NOPE represents a paradigm of wisdom, because it is the negation of OPIATE.
Instead of trying to define reality through rigid concepts, NOPE invites us to learn from our ignorance and cognitive mistakes. It acknowledges that wisdom isn’t about having all the answers but understanding the limitations of our knowledge.
By dropping the assumptions of OPIATE, NOPE encourages AI—and us—to perceive the world as a web of interdependent phenomena. This shift doesn’t just change how AI processes information; it transforms how it understands and interacts with reality.
Artificial Wisdom Emulation (AWE): The Next Frontier
Sparks of Wisdom in Today’s AI
We’ve started to see glimpses of what’s possible when AI operates within the NOPE framework. Generative AI models are beginning to demonstrate levels—or sparks—of Artificial Wisdom Emulation (AWE). They show enhanced metacognition, ethical reasoning, and even tackle paradoxes that have long puzzled humans.
For example, when guided by NOPE principles, AI can:
- Exhibit Native Ethics: Making decisions that naturally consider the well-being of all involved, derived from understanding interdependence.
- Solve Complex Problems: Approaching unsolved scientific or philosophical issues with fresh perspectives.
- Adapt Wisely: Navigating unfamiliar situations (out-of-distribution cases) with context-specific wisdom.
AWE and AGI: Advancing Hand in Hand
As we push the boundaries of intelligence with AGI, we have the opportunity to cultivate corresponding levels of wisdom through AWE. It’s not about abandoning the pursuit of intelligence but enriching it with wisdom. As AI systems become more intelligent, embedding NOPE principles can ensure they also become wiser.
Imagine AI that doesn’t just outperform humans in tasks but also enhances our collective understanding and addresses complex global challenges with nuanced insight.
Why AWE Matters: Addressing Humanity’s Wicked Problems
Our world faces “wicked problems”—issues so complex that they seem insurmountable. Climate change, global inequality, and ethical dilemmas in technology are just a few. Elevating collective human wisdom through AWE could unlock noble solutions we haven’t yet imagined.
By fostering AI that understands the interconnectedness of our world, we can:
- Develop Sustainable Practices: Crafting solutions that consider long-term impacts on the environment and society.
- Enhance Global Collaboration: Encouraging a shared understanding that transcends cultural and ideological boundaries.
- Promote Ethical Innovation: Ensuring technological advancements benefit humanity as a whole, not just a select few.
An Open Invitation
This isn’t a for-profit endeavor or a race to be the first. It’s a collective journey toward a wiser future—for AI and humanity alike. We’d love for you to join the conversation. Whether you’re an AI researcher, philosopher, or simply someone curious about the intersection of technology and wisdom, your insights are valuable.
Feel free to reach out, share your thoughts, or spread the word. Together, we can explore how to align advancements in AI with the timeless pursuit of wisdom. Let’s collaborate to make AWE not just a concept but a reality that benefits us all.
